Grants for business are in abundance within the United States. One of the best places to find out what grants for business are available is to visit the Small Business Administration site. There you will find a Federal government agency site that’s mandate is to help small business in America succeed and it has access to all the grants for businesses that are available throughout the United States.

Despite the stories that the government just wants to throw billions of dollars your way without you doing much more than filling out a simple application is a fallacy. These grants for businesses are available but like everything in life you have to work for them. They don’t come handed to you on a silver platter but boy they are worth the effort you put into them to get a free small business grant.

If you operate a non profit organization your chance of getting one of the small business grants actually goes up a great deal. However, most of us do not operate a non profit organization so you need to be prepared for the long and winding process you must go through to get considered for some of these grants for businesses. The small business administration site doesn’t have its own funds to allocate. They are simply a resource that can send you in the right direction for the free small business grant money you are looking for.

At times the general small business grants can be very tough to get. However, if you are of a minority or you are woman there are other grants such as the minority small business grants. So why not apply for those too? You can apply for as many grants as you like and since the grants for businesses list is very long why not take a careful look at it to see if there is more than one category that you might be able to apply under.

If you are looking for grants for small business to help take your business to the next level or get your business off the ground, you aren’t alone. If you are just starting your business you will need to look for small business grant money flagged for startups. The federal government grant for small business is sure to have something that fits.

Small business grants are also available if your business is already in operation. Since small businesses play such an important role in the economic growth of the country it’s understandable why government is busy providing billions of dollars for grants for businesses. These types of small business grants are offered by the government to make available more small business grant money.

So many businesses are leaving the US for greener pastures overseas where the cost of operating a business is a fraction of what it is in the US. This is one reason so many small business loans and grants are available to encourage business to stay and grow at home. So if you are an existing small business within the US, be sure to have a look at all the grants for businesses that are available.

Grants for businesses are awarded to a vide variety of businesses, to give them a better chance to grow and succeed. The government wants to help small business flourish in a market that’s so volatile. Be sure to shop around and put your energy into creating the most impressive proposal and application ever.

Everywhere you turn – T.V., Radio, magazines, or the Internet, someone is talking about government grants. What’s the real story? Does the government give away real money, to ordinary people, to use for whatever they want?

NO THEY DON’T! At least not to use for whatever you want. However, if you want to use grant money for something that the government is interested in funding, and you file a grant application that gets approved, then things can get interesting.

Let’s take a closer look:

The government has loads of grant programs that they offer. In fact, at last count, there were 1569 of them. That’s 1569 possibilities that someone in the U.S. government is going to be willing to give you some free money. The only issue is: Which government grant(s) do you qualify for, and how do you find out?

Broadly speaking, there are 15 major grant categories. They are:

(A) Formula Grants
Allocations of money to States or their subdivisions in accordance with distribution formulas prescribed by law or administrative regulation, for activities of a continuing nature not confined to a specific project.

(B) Project Grants
The funding, for fixed or known periods, of specific projects. Project grants can include fellowships, scholarships, research grants, training grants, traineeships, experimental and demonstration grants, evaluation grants, planning grants, technical assistance grants, survey grants, and construction grants.

(C) Direct Payments for Specified Use Financial assistance from the Federal government provided directly to individuals, private firms, and other private institutions to encourage or subsidize a particular activity by conditioning the receipt of the assistance on a particular performance by the recipient. This does not include solicited contracts for the procurement of goods and services for the Federal government.

(D) Direct Payments with Unrestricted Use Financial assistance from the Federal government provided directly to beneficiaries who satisfy Federal eligibility requirements with no restrictions being imposed on the recipient as to how the money is spent. Included are payments under retirement, pension, and compensatory programs.

(E) Direct Loans
Financial assistance provided through the lending of Federal monies for a specific period of time, with a reasonable expectation of repayment. Such loans may or may not require the payment of interest.

(F) Guaranteed/Insured Loans Programs in which the Federal government makes an arrangement to identify a lender against part or all of any defaults by those responsible for repayment of loans.

(G) Insurance
Financial assistance provided to assure reimbursement for losses sustained under specified conditions. Coverage may be provided directly by the Federal government or through private carriers and may or may not involve the payment of premiums.

(H) Sale, Exchange, or Donation of Property and Goods Programs which provide for the sale, exchange, or donation of Federal real property, personal property, commodities, and other goods including land, buildings, equipment, food and drugs. This does not include the loan of, use of, or access to Federal facilities or property.

(I) Use of Property, Facilities, and Equipment Programs which provide for the loan of, use of, or access to Federal facilities or property wherein the federally owned facilities or property do not remain in the possession of the recipient of the assistance.

(J) Provision of Specialized Services Programs which provide Federal personnel directly to perform certain tasks for the benefit of communities or individuals. These services may be performed in conjunction with nonfederal personnel, but they involve more than consultation, advice, or counseling.

(K) Advisory Services and Counseling Programs which provide Federal specialists to consult, advise, or counsel communities or individuals to include conferences, workshops, or personal contacts. This may involve the use of published information, but only in a secondary capacity.

(L) Dissemination of Technical Information Programs which provide for the publication and distribution of information or data of a specialized or technical nature frequently through clearinghouses or libraries. This does not include conventional public information services designed for general public consumption.

(M) Training
Programs which provide instructional activities conducted directly by a Federal agency for individuals not employed by the Federal government.

(N) Investigation of Complaints Federal administrative agency activities that are initiated in response to requests, either formal or informal, to examine or investigate claims of violations of Federal statutes, policies, or procedure. The origination of such claims must come from outside the Federal government.

(O) Federal Employment
Programs which reflect the Governmentwide responsibilities of the Office of Personnel Management in the recruitment and hiring of Federal civilian agency personnel.

With all of those categories, and 1569 grant possibilities to wade through, you could spend days searching for just one grant funding source only to find out that you don’t qualify for some reason. By the time you do find some obscure grant that you can apply for, it might be too late because all of the money has been spent. That’s why many people hire professional grant writers to do all of the work for them. Well, that’s fine for big companies, but what about us little guys who, if we could afford to hire a grant writer, probably wouldn’t be looking for a grant.

Fortunately, there are software programs that will share the work of finding grant money. The better ones enable you to electronically search an online database of all U.S. government grant programs, by keywords, and returns a list of grants that match your criteria. Then, once you read the grant’s terms and conditions, the software helps and guides you through the application process. So, you get the best of both worlds: Professional assistance, just like a paid grant writer would offer, but you save a LOT of money in the process.

There is millions upon millions of government grant money available. All you have to do is find one that matches your interests and apply. If your application is approved, the check’s in the mail!

Good luck!

Many individuals are looking for grants or "free money" to start their business. They may have read or heard that free money for business owners exists, and how easy it is to get hold of these monies. Some have read ads, in print or on the Web, offering them information as to where to get free grants. With these ads making it look like there is money out there for the taking, who wouldn’t dream to get a part of it?

But, is there really free money out there for small and home-based businesses? The answer is "Yes" and "No."

There are hundreds of millions of dollars in grant funding available free to entrepreneurs and small business owners. These grant monies come from the government, non-governmental organizations, and private institutions. The grant amount ranges from $5,000 up to some in the six figures. Best of all, absolutely none of them requires a pay back. You, too may have seen or read advertising in this regard.

However, the myth of "free money" intended for starting or expanding a small business needs to be dispelled.

Most funding institutions do not provide grants or "free money" for starting or developing a business. The Small Business Administration, Bank of America Foundation, and other grant funding sources do not give capital to start a day care or clothing design business, etc.. Nor do they provide grants to individuals who will use the proceeds to start their own "for profit" small business.

Rather, funding organizations generally target their assistance towards specific groups, types of organizations or activities. The grants provided by SBA are normally given to nonprofits or educational institutions. The Bank of America Foundation considers charitable requests from nonprofit organizations in geographic areas where the company has a business presence. These funding institutions provide funds mostly in a "project" context, consistent with their organization’s goals and objectives.

There are a few grant sources that provide money directly to individuals. However, the use of the grant proceeds must be consistent with the objectives of the funding institution. Since most grants are project-based, many funding organizations require that the applicant provide counterpart funding. Grants may cover only a fraction of the project cost; very rarely do grants cover 100% of the total cost.

Take for example the Indian Grant Program given by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This program gives up to $100,000 to American Indian individuals. However, the grant stipulates that the funds must be used for "development of profit-oriented businesses that will have positive economic impact on Indian Reservation." Furthermore, the grant must be no more than 25 percent of project costs – meaning that the individual must provide 75 percent counterpart money for the project.

Resources on Grants

Entrepreneurs and would-be business owners seeking grant funding for a project can check out the following books and web sites in the US and other countries. Note that some of the sites are free, while others require subscription.

There are many differences you should consider between student aid and free grants. When you get financial aid then you are getting a loan from the government. The government grants are monies that do not need to be paid back.

Student grants and free grants are designed to help people who cannot afford to pay for furthering their education. These govt grants are often donations made by private parties or money the government has set aside for students participating in certain programs.

There are many ways you might need to qualify for government grants and student grants. Some of the grants include contests for essay writing. It might be determined that the person who writes the best article on quantum physics gets a science grant. Usually the essay will be related to a specific field of study.

Many government grants are specific to specific fields of study also. You cannot apply for any govt grants. Your degree program needs to be related to the specified program the student grants are for.

Not everyone qualifies for free grants. Anyone can apply for free government grants but not everyone is chosen. There might be one or two grants and two hundred applicants. There are usually specific guidelines for how the agencies make their decision on who qualifies for student grants. However, there are many people who are awarded grants because they were the only person who applied. There are also hundreds of student grants that are not awarded at all each year because no one knows anything about them.

Anyone can qualify for student aid from the government. This is a government loan for you to go to school. You will be required to pay the money for your education back after your degree program is completed. If you drop out of school then you will be responsible for the entirety of the loans immediately upon stopping your education. If you get student aid then your best decision is to finish school.

There are many differences between student aid and government grants. Student aid is not free grants and it requires you to pay the money back. Government grants are awarded to certain people who qualify and you don’t have to pay the money back.

Do You Know that Small Business Grants Can be Waiting for You Almost ‘Round the Corner’?

We are living in the times when governments understand the value of small businesses for the global economy. Small businesses are the pushers and testing grounds for new trends, they provide lots of jobs for the masses, they make any society more stable and happy. So governments have created special funds, programs, associations to provide government grants for small business.

You can be surprised to find out that there are so many types of grants that you can be missing and that can help you out almost instantly – minority small business grants, small business grants for woman, federal grants for small business, business start up grants and even free small business grants. All these types of grants act as a real proof that they really help many small businesses to succeed.

There are two typical issues about getting small business grants.

(1) WHERE to Get Small Business Grants.

Start with doing local search for ‘small business grants’, ‘small business bank loans’, ‘venture funds’ and ‘angel investors’. This will give you a pretty big list of places to apply for help.

If you are in the USA – there are some majors that provide this type of financial assistance – for example, Small Business Administration (SBA) that has many departments that fit all possible types of businesses or help. It can also be wise to check the catalogue of Federal Domestic Assistance – there you can find many good places to apply for the grants.

For businesses outside US there is also a way to succeed. Government, public or private organizations in your country must be giving some help to new small businesses within the framework of these institutions:

- economic development programs, funds, departments, opportunities, initiatives; – banks (usually they have special small business loans and programs); – venture funds, companies, firms; – credit partnerships; – angel investors (this type of business got very popular recently).

The list is big, but it means that you do not need to trust one business grant opportunity. The more opportunities, the better for you!

(2) HOW to Get Small Business Grants.

There is no magic formula to safe getting of grants.

But you can increase your chances using these simple tips.

Build a good business plan. Surely you are starting your business with some plan, but here you need to be very convincing, well-prepared to any questions. People who read this plan must understand and feel that the only element necessary for your success is the money, the grant.

Keep in good contact with your grant agent (manager, officer, anyone who is in charge of all details). Don’t be a pusher, but make sure that you are in control of the situation. A lot will depend upon this person, maybe not the final decision, but a lot. Make sure he/she can reach you at any moment. And would be great if you have his/her contact details, the more, the better.

It’s posted all over the Internet. You hear it on the radio, and see it on television. The United States government is giving away free money in the form of federal grants. While it’s true that the government does indeed award $400 billion annually through its 26 federal entities, the statement of free money through the government doesn’t exactly pinpoint the definition of a federal grant.

The majority of federal grants that are awarded are the farthest thing from being considered free money. Grants are most often awarded to organizations planning major projects to benefit a community. It could include money to be used for repaving streets in a city. A grant could also be awarded for a nonprofit organization featuring an art exhibit or musical performance. Grants are also awarded for technological research, conservation, and flood control projects. While there are other sources that are awarded grant funding, in general, the free money aspect is lost, and individuals, in general, are not qualified for most grants other than those used for educational purposes such as to pay tuition bills for higher education. Businesses can also tap into the federal grant program, but only by meeting strict criteria through the government agency offering the grant, such as if grant funding is available for research in a particular area that is of specialty to that business.

The free money offered through a grant program can lead to financial and legal disaster to an organization that does not abide by the strict rules that the grant holds. By failing on a part of the obligation agreed upon when the grant is approved, the organization and/or persons in charge are held accountable. Penalties can range from economic sanctions to prison in the instance of improper use or theft of this free money.

Because this free money through Federal grants is carefully monitored, the truth is that the money isn’t actually free. Applying for Federal grants takes an unbelievable amount of time. Additionally, by even unintentionally not abiding by the grant’s requirements, as mentioned, an individual that is unfamiliar with the Federal government’s grant programs can find themselves in a financial or legal disaster. With Federal funding cutbacks and the competition for grant fundings becoming more intense, seeking free money through a grant requires not only time, but also money, with no guarantee of success.

The plain truth is that with federal funding cutbacks and competition for them becoming more intense, seeking a federal grant always requires a lot of time and potentially a lot of money up front with no guarantee of success. Dedication is needed, and is the most important part of attempting to obtain free money through grant funding.

US government grants all have a system they go. If you do not know the system then free grants are going to remain elusive. My best words of advice are learn how free government grants work, or pay someone to do it for you!

My overview of federal grants is simple.

26 federal agencies who distribute free grants by:

15 different ways of giving federal grants to you:

Lets cover the 15 different ways that the us government grants are handed out.

(F) Guaranteed/Insured Loans
Programs in which the Federal government makes an arrangement to identify a lender against part or all of any defaults by those responsible for repayment of loans.

(G) Insurance
Free grants to provide financial assistance to assure reimbursement for losses sustained under specified conditions. us government grants may be provided directly by the Federal government or through private carriers and may or may not involve the payment of premiums.

(H) Sale, Exchange, or Donation of Property and Goods
Programs which provide for the sale, exchange, or donation of Federal real property, personal property, commodities, and other goods including land, buildings, equipment, food and drugs. Have you ever heard of the Dollar Home Sale?

(I) Use of Property, Facilities, and Equipment
Programs which provide for the loan of, use of, or access to Federal facilities or property wherein the federally owned facilities or property do not remain in the possession of the recipient of the assistance.

(J) Provision of Specialized Services
Programs which provide Federal personnel directly to perform certain tasks for the benefit of communities or individuals. These services may be performed in conjunction with nonfederal personnel, but they involve more than consultation, advice, or counseling.

(K) Advisory Services and Counseling
Programs which provide Federal specialists to consult, advise, or counsel communities or individuals to include conferences, workshops, or personal contacts. This may involve the use of published information, but only in a secondary capacity.

(L) Dissemination of Technical InformationPrograms
which provide for the publication and distribution of information or data of a specialized or technical nature frequently through clearinghouses or libraries. This does not include conventional public information services designed for general public consumption.

(M) Training
Federal Grants for programs which provide instructional activities conducted directly by a us government grants agency for individuals not employed by the Federal government.

(N) Investigation of Complaints
Us government grants agency activities that are initiated in response to requests, either formal or informal, to examine or investigate claims of violations of Federal statutes, policies, or procedure. The origination of such claims must come from outside the Federal government.

(O) Federal EmploymentPrograms
which reflect the Government wide responsibilities of the Office of Personnel Management in the recruitment and hiring of Federal civilian agency personnel.

These us government grants cover a wide variety of ways federal grants gives money for small business and individuals. The possibilities are endless for us government grants and for federal educational grants for you and your employees. Some free grants are in the form of loans and are what is called forgivable loans. Which means if you do not sell your business than the loan is forgiven and over time period and you do not pay anything back. The whole goal with free grants is to strengthen America and it workforce.

Government grants provide free money to start and expand small businesses. According to the federal government’s Small Business Administration (SBA), most small businesses fail within the first five years. One of the most common reasons is a lack of adequate funding.

Despite this fact, federal and state governments award billions of dollars in grant money each year to individuals from all walks of life to start their own business.

The Grant Authority is written to help entrepreneurs and business owners locate and apply for grants from the government and other, non-government sources.

Its author, Ron Wainrib, Esq., is an attorney and writer with decades of experience as a consultant to small businesses. He has taught entrepreneurs who want to start their own business the pros and cons of running and financing a new business, and keys to obtaining small business funding.

His book offers resources, a comprehensive glossary, and an extensive collection of forms and other important documents in its Appendix on a free CD that comes with it.

Unlike many books that just offer lists of the million of dollars of grants available to start or expand your business, The Grant Authority teaches you where to find these grants, how to apply for them with a well-written grant proposal, and what to do after you submit your proposal.

It features real-life success stories of people who launched their businesses with the help of government grants. “You’d be amazed at the businesses that began in someone’s garage or home and grew to important contributors to our national defense, war against terror, and war for energy independence” Wainrib says.

He shows how major companies, including Cobasys, FuelCell, ArmorWorks and Siga, have used government grants to fund their research and development work for energy conservation, military armor and smallpox vaccines, to protect the nation’s safety and security.

The book includes checklists, tips and web site photos to simplify the complex grants process, teach you how to do effective research, and write well-written grant proposals to gain a winning edge in the competitive world of grants.

In tough economic times people are finding it harder to meet their financial obligations, whether due to a loss of a job, an illness that has prevented them from working or simply though bad money management. Whatever the reason, it is far easier to get into debt and financial trouble than it is to get out of it. There are a few government loans and debt relief programs available to help people better manage their finances. They also explain how to work with creditors to make it more realistic that the debt can be eliminated.

There are also some companies that promise to help those in financial trouble obtain grants from the government to eliminate their debt, but the reality is these promises are probably over rated. Finding government loans and debt relief programs can be done by going directly to the source and, although it may take some time to research the proper program for each individual circumstance, it can be worth the time and effort.

However, while researching the availability of government loans and debt relief it will probably become evident that there are no direct grants available to help people pay off their debt. There are numerous government grants that people can apply for as an individual or as a business, even non-profit organizations that if approved, are often used to pay off burgeoning debt, but the grant is not given solely for the purpose of getting out of debt.

Do Not Be Fooled By Unrealistic Promises

Unfortunately, there are some individuals that make promises about being able to help find government loans and debt relief that probably will not be able to deliver on their promises. In many cases they are selling a list of grants being offered by a host of agencies, but some of these grants have a limited application period. Some of these folks are selling the lists, available online of free, that may be outdated.

Where help can be found is in applying for the government loans and debt relief grants. When a grant is available, there are people that will look over the application and make a determination if the applicant is qualified for the grant. If there are any mistakes or inconsistencies in the government loans and debt relief grant application, it will be turned down. Persons with experience in writing grant applications can greatly improve the chances of it being approved.

If you need college grant money, this article is for you. More sources for grants mean more opportunity to get money. Money you can use for tuition, textbooks, living expenses, a computer, transportation, and other student expenses.

Let’s get into the sources. First of all, have you heard of Ted Kennedy? He is the senate chairman of the education committee. Recently, he and President Bush came to an agreement on education finance. As a result, over $20 billion will move from other programs into the Pell grant program – which you may have applied to.

Everybody knows about Pell grants. Just thought you’d like to know that more people will receive Pells in the years ahead. Now on to more sources you may not have heard of yet.

Have you heard of the National Sea Grant College Program? It is an office of the federal government that studies seas and oceans. They offer grants to college students in every coastal and great lakes state. Think about all that coastline – that’s a lot of states! This is their website:

http://www.education.noaa.gov/students.html

Also, NASA offers a college grant program. NASA has several outreach programs for students, for students at all levels. For higher education, NASA offers a grant and scholarship program for space research projects. Go to this link, and click for students and then higher education:

http://www.nasa.gov/

The above programs are great. And the federal government offers in addition to the Pell grant, the Federal Supplemental Equal Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), and the Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART grants). To learn more about these federal programs, you can go to:

http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/grants.jsp

But that’s just the start. You may not have enough for school even after all the federal programs listed above. Many more programs exist for you to check into for college grant money. For instance, have you checked with your state lately?

Every one of the fifty states has at least one program of its own. Some, like California and New York State, have several. You might be surprised when you look up your state. You can get government money for college all across the country.

And it doesn’t stop their. Do you live in a territory or the District of Columbia? Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. both have excellent student grant programs. The only territory you might have trouble with: The Northern Marianas, you know, Saipan, Tinian, Rota, it’s an island chain. And maybe American Samoa. Otherwise, you should find a program you can apply to for aid.

As you might expect, some of the smaller states don’t compare to the large, more populous ones. These will have fewer programs, perhaps just one or two. The large states, like Texas, will have many more. Having choices in your college funding helps as you look for tuition money. This short article search for grants.

Some states offer grants for students at vocational schools or even for part time students or nontraditional students returning to school. Very helpful that people have set up programs like this for so many who need help.

One other idea. Many states have banded together to offer discounts and exceptions for out of state students in certain cases or for certain schools. I hadn’t seen these agreements before researching and writing about government money for college opportunities. It turns out that a group of states in the Rockies and west formed an alliance, as did a group of states in the south. A few plains states also offer waivers, but not as a group.

This can help you attend a good school that would normally be out of reach if you fall in the right category. Instead of paying out of state tuition, you can get an exception and pay in state tuition as if you were a normal resident, and finish your degree.

For state programs, take a look at your state government site and look for higher education programs. Then, look for a grants page or one about financial aid. With some looking, you can find these great programs.
