The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) exists to provide free assistance to identity theft victims; educate consumers, corporations, government agencies, and other organizations on best practices for fraud and identity theft detection and mitigation; and provide consulting and services related to information breach, fraud, and identity theft.
Data and statistics can be found on the ITRC Web site. Some of its milestones include:
ITRC’s work with state and federal legislation regarding child identity theft, mandatory police reports, security breach advisories, credit freezes and protecting identifying information.
ITRC released a collaborative victim study, and has published guides on check fraud and check theft, and a guide for parents concerned about their children’s vulnerability to identity theft. ITRC produced a second-edition corporate risk management book and gives presentations based on the material.
As part of an ID Theft Network, ITRC serves as an advisor, conducts victim assistance training classes, and contributes to a Web cast about ID theft. Press releases are posted on the ITRC Web site pertaining to identity theft and disasters, and tax-time tips.
ITRC received the Crime Victims Service Award for 2004 from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Victims of Crime, and a commendation letter from California Senator Dianne Feinstein. With a grant from the San Diego County (Calif.) Supervisors to expand identity theft education in the county, ITRC attended community fairs and conducted a Roving Clinic.
In its 2006 Scam Response Survey Report, the ITRC explains why some people still fall victims to scams and helps citizens avoid becoming a victim of the next new scam.
